Preliminary Summer Calendar

The preliminary dates are now up for this Summer. As you can see we are planning the biggest season yet and have made a few adjustments to times and races based on feed back and experience gained from last year. Some dates and distances may still change. We are planning to run two divisions for Ocean Series races.

The Cradle Coast Outrigger Canoe Club of Tasmania will be holding their annual outrigger regatta in November at Boat Harbour Beach on the North West Coast on the following dates Friday 12th, Saturday 13th, & Sunday 14th November 2010.

This is their 3rd regatta and to make it even more successful than previous years they have decided to shift the event to a new location to Boat Harbour Beach and have added 3 races to the program for Ocean racing skis & Spec Skis. They have also added a King of the Mountain 3km road run up the hill and back for the local runners in the area.

For the Spec Surf Ski & Ocean Racing Skis the 3 races will be all different formats with prize money and medals awarded in each event. At the end of the 3 events we will announce a series winner for each division with the highest point scorer being awarded the series trophy and a cash bonus.

Sprotty and Ace's Excellent Molokai Adventure

Here it is proof that Sprotty and Ace are complete bastards. They are basically out off Diamond Head going back in towards China Walls. Enjoy!

Two Southern Paddlers To Paddle Molokai

This Sunday the 16th May will see not one but two Southern Paddlers take on the World Surf Ski Championships in Hawaii. The race has long been considered the pinnacle of ocean paddling with competitors taking on the volatile Ka’iwi Channel — considered one of the roughest ocean channels in the world. Ace Petrie and Angus Sprott will line up next to the elite of world paddling as part of a crack Australian contingent keen to steal the championship back from South Africa after Hank Magregor won the title last year.

Favourites for this years race include last years Australian standout in Jeremy Cotter, Dubai Shamal two time winner Tim Jacobs, Olympian and multiple Aussie champion Clint Robinson and 9 time Molokai winner and current holder of the fastest time Dean Gardiner. From all of Southern Paddlers we would like to wish Ace and Sprotty the best of luck, hopefully the trades blow and they can show the rest of the world that Tasmanians can paddle, especially when the wind blows. Angus has promised to fill me in on all the details so stay tuned for more reports in the lead up to and after the race.

Stellar Fenn and EOS at The Southern Paddlers Coaching Clinic and Demo Day

Stellar, Fenn and now EOS will have boats available to demo this weekend at the coaching clinic. If you are looking at stepping into a ski or upgrading to something a bit more slippery now is a good time to do it. Sprotty will have a Fenn Elite and an XT whilst we will have two Stellar Elites for you to try. Stewy Lawless will have the all new EOS available for a paddle as well.

2010 Ocean Paddling State Championships

The inaugural Tasmanian Ocean Paddling State Championships were run and won yesterday in somewhat benign conditions. A strong field including series leader Jim Stubbs, multiple Australian wild water representative Ben Maynard and Olympian Jim Walker lined up for the 16km race from Seven Mile Beach to Lauderdale via Whale rock in the middle of Frederick Henry Bay.

As the starting horn sounded it was Ben Maynard who showed the field a clean set of heels powering away with his trademark steamtrain impersenation followed closely by Stew Lawless, Sprotty, and the Carlton Bushrangers Stubbsy and Ace. As the leaders rounded Spec Island Lester and Cooka were trying to get on terms with the lead pack closely followed by a hard charging Andrew Buckley and Marty Stephenson, they in turn were followed by a chase group with Disco Sargison in the front seat followed by Matty Watton, Pricey and a quickly gaining Andrew Palmer.

At Whale Rock Ben Maynard was still clear of Stubbsy and Ace whilst Sprotty had decided to wait for Stewy Lawless rather than try to catch them on his own. Behind them were Cooka, Lester and Bucks then another 30 seconds back on his own was Marty Stephenson about 20 seconds in front of Matty Watton, Disco, Palms, Pricey and now Jim Walker who had settled in to a steady pace after the fast start and quickly picked up most of the field. Behind this group were ones and twos with John Hitchens and Travis Woods steadily closing the gap to the group in front. As the only woman in the field Marjorie Morgan could have just been content to paddle in and collect the title after being asked by the support boat if she was ok she answered rather bluntly that she waould be if she could catch that bloke in front of her - good stuff!

In the finish Ben Maynard was simply too good taking out the title from a fast finishing Jim Stubbs with Ace Petrie rounding out the podium. In the 40+ category Lester Nation won over Matty Watton and Andrew Palmer whilst Marjorie Morgan won the womens and did manage to catch the bloke in front of her. Jamie Stubbs managed to overhaul Lester to take the coveted Ocean Series title with Stew Lawless showing his consistency in third. Matty Watton went home with a smile on his face after winning the Fenn 3 paddle and Cap spot prize that was generously donated by Tassie Fenn rep Angus Sprott. Ian and I would like to thank everyone that competed over the series and helped make the racing hard and close, the sport is definately growing rapidly and heading in the right direction with the standard improved markedly. We would also like to thank the awesome support volunteers that help make the events well run and safe - without you guys there wouldn't be any races, cheers. Don't forget the upcoming coaching clinic with Jim Walker on the 24th April. To confirm a place the $100 must be paid and with places filling fast it certainly a case of first in best dressed.

I think you only do that with the gold ones Palms!

Twilight Race 9 Final 9th March 2010

Hopes for a record field attending the last race of this Summers Twilight Series were dashed by the unseasonably cold temperatures and the gale force winds caused by a big front blowing over the state. The weather wasn't going to stop the hardy souls that turned up though and so after digging out some warmer clothing the field set of for two laps of the traditional course. Once again Stew Lawless prevailed over Sprotty with the now bearded bushranger in Ace Petrie taking third.

The draw for the Fenn paddle donated by Angus Sprott took place after the race and was won by Matt Dalziel (because he needs another paddle). The series was a great success and saw more than 60 different paddlers line up over the Summer. Many of these paddlers have tried their hand at the weekend Ocean Series races as well and proved to themselves that they are capable of paddling the longer distances and dealing with the sometimes rougher conditions. Our thanks go to Anne, Rex and Ringo for timing and safety boat duties, these guys consistantly give up their time to help make the series a success and do a great job. We would also like to thank the DSS for allowing us the use of their facilities. Don't forget the first ever Ocean Paddling State Title will be run on the 27th March - keep an eye on the website for details.
